Amanda Strydom – Good old days
South African artist born on 23 July 1956 in Port Elizabeth. At school she participated in art competitions, sang in several school choirs, and took piano lessons before deciding to switch to speech and drama classes. After passing matric at Framesby High School, she furthered her studies at Tukkies and in 1978 obtained the degree BA Drama. The following year she started working in Cape Town at CAPAB (Cape Performing Arts Board) and soon thereafter played a role in the Franz Marx film "Pasgetroud" opposite seasoned artists such as Alex Heyns and Miems de Bruin.
She subsequently worked in the entertainment industry for several years, including theatre, film, and television, as well as a cabaret singer, TV and radio presenter and author. Some of her best-known roles on TV were that of the Polish singer Elzbieta Karski in the drama series "1922", for which she won the "Star Tonight" award for best actress in 1985, and the role of Jupiter Jones in the TV series " Westgate”. In the late 1980s she followed a completely different career by working at an insurance company but was eventually persuaded to return to entertainment by Johannes Kerkorrel and Didi Kriel.
In 1993 she played the role of Hilde Bauer in the TV series "Arende", and worked as an announcer on Highveld Stereo and as a presenter on the then TV channel NNTV. She used the time between announcements to write her first one-woman piece, "State of the Heart", with which she undertook a nationwide tour and won the Dalro Award. This was followed by a series of shows which she wrote, directed, and performed herself, including "The Incredible Journey of Tinkerbell van Tonder", "Diva", "In Full Flight" and "Die Taal van my Hart". During her career she won many prizes, including the Kanna at the KKNK in 2004 as "Best Female Artist" and later that year the SAMA for "Best Afrikaans Contemporary Album" for "Verspreide Donderbuie".
According to Amanda Strydom the highest honour she has received is the “Erepenning” (Medal of Honour) from the “Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns” (Academy of Science and Art) for her contribution to the arts. She is also very popular in countries such as Belgium and the Netherlands, and in September 2008 performed at the Koninklijk Theater Carré in Amsterdam, the highest honour that can be bestowed upon an artist in the Netherlands. She was presenter of the European travel programme "Trippe Trappe Trone" which was broadcast on kykNET, and from 1983 onwards she released many albums on vinyl and on CD. Amanda lives in Johannesburg, can soon be seen at Aardklop and Word Festivals, and in November she will again perform in the Netherlands and Belgium. She celebrates 44 years in the industry this year.
