André Schwartz (born in Johannesburg, South Africa) launched his singing career when he made his TV debut at the age of 13. He started taking music as a ninth subject – a necessity as he hated science. He then studied law at the University of Stellenbosch, however singing took centre stage and he studied under the inimitable Prof George van der Spuy. He won a bursary to further his singing career at the Mozarteum in Salzburg but, not being ready to make the commitment to become an opera singer, he focused on his legal studies.

During his National Service in the Air Force he landed his first role in a musical when he played ‘Frederick‘ in ‘The Pirates of Penzance‘. It was also during this period that he signed his first recording contract. After his stint in the Air Force, he started doing, what he loves most, professionally… singing! André hit the South African music scene like a rocket shooting into the stratosphere.

He has recorded numerous albums with many of them reaching gold status. Favorites include a CD featuring the hit songs from the world’s best Musicals and a Big Band album called ’12 plus 1 – Big Band Classics’.

Having performed in literally thousands of stage and television productions, both locally and internationally, hosted a variety of TV programs, guest starred in Soapies, been crowned SA’s most popular man (it was a while back – before gravity started taking its toll), it is probably no surprise that André is widely regarded as being an iconic member of the South African music industry with his numerous Afrikaans hits becoming indelibly imprinted on popular culture.

His inimitable personality and talent has made him one of the most loved and recognizable performers in South Africa.

On the Musical Theatre front he has starred as ‘Joseph‘ in ‘Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat‘ and ‘Jesus‘ in ‘Jesus Christ Superstar‘.

André diversified and started his own marketing and advertising agency – Andre Schwartz Marketing. His client base includes some of the biggest and best known brands in South Africa and he loves the challenges of this very competitive and creative industry.

André first performed ‘The Phantom‘ in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘The Phantom of the Opera‘ in 2004. His interpretation of the role has become legendary with fans and critics alike, winning both a Naledi and a Fleur du Cap award for his performance. André was really thrilled to have been offered the role as ‘The Phantom‘ in the 2011/2012 production.

In his own words: “I have been in and out of therapy for 5 years since playing that sad, disturbed, wonderful, scary, talented, frightened, beautiful, strange, haunting man and now I am discovering even more qualities about him that leaves me even totally confused! A feeling I love and an opportunity I cherish.”

In 2013, after a break from his singing career and a very successful run as ‘Phantom’, André recorded his long awaited Afrikaans album,’Ek wil weer’ with some songs written by André himself.
