Koos du Plessis – As almal ver is
South African Artist / Suid-Afrikaanse kunstenaar: Koos du Plessis
Kant 2 Snit 03 vanaf sy LP ‘As almal ver is...’ (1981) (CD 2010)
"As dit gedaan is, en verby,
en die aarde weer sy erfdeel kry,
sal hierdie kluisenaar in my
nog iewers in 'n boekrak bly... "
Jacobus (Koos) Johannes du Plessis (* May 10, 1945 - † January 14, 1984) was a prominent South African singer-songwriter.
Although he received critical acclaim for much of his work, he became best known for the runaway success of a rendition of his song ‘Kinders Van Die Wind’ (Children of the Wind) recorded by Laurika Rauch.
Koos du Plessis was born in Rustenburg. He was the youngest of four children, and grew up in the mining town of Springs. After school, he attended the University of Pretoria and the University of the Witwatersrand, majoring in Afrikaans-Nederlands (Afrikaans-Dutch).
Koos du Plessis was 39 years old when he died in a car accident (1984). This introverted journalist (he hated interviews and photos taken) had published two anthologies and released three albums. He was working on the fourth when he died.
Koos was the creator of the 'Luisterliedjie’... his work has been covered by more artists than any other South African composer. He recorded 44 songs, and wrote many more, one of which is 'Gebed' which has been included on the definitive 2CD collection ‘Volledig’, the complete recorded works of Koos du Plessis... composer, poet and philosopher. All the tracks from his first 3 albums appear on this compilation. These three albums were completed by Koos before he died. The album ‘Die Vierde Horison‘ was started but only many years later after Koos' death was the album compiled and certain tracks completed.
Koos du Plessis, unfortunately, never recorded ‘Gebed‘ but it was recorded by Lucas Maree and Jannie du Toit as well as by his daughter, Karla du Plessis.
